Goa is the smallest state
of the Indian Union. Itīs character is very much distinct from the
surrounding states, mainly due to the influence of the 450 year long
portuguese rule, which ended in 1961. Goaīs history shows in the
splendid colonial architecture, many churches and a large proportion of
catholics in the population. In the 60s Goa turned into an important
"hippie" destination. Things have changed, nowadays Goa is frequented
by backpackers, package tourists and domestic travelers alike.
Nevertheless, the tourism industry has been confined to the coastal
belt, leaving the rest of the state relatively untouched.
